At Peepul, an NGO in India for education, we are on a mission to build 21st century skills and bridge the digital divide for the children studying in public schools of Delhi and Madhya Pradesh. We emphasize the need for both students and teachers to be digitally savvy.

What’s Digital Literacy and Why is it Important?

Digital literacy goes far beyond simply operating a computer or smartphone. It is the ability to access, evaluate, and use digital information thoughtfully and responsibly. How Peepul is Bridging the Digital Divide

When we talk about digital literacy in today’s education, it’s more than just incorporating tech into classrooms. It’s all about prepping them for a world that’s changing faster than we can keep up with.

Peepul understands how powerful digital literacy can be, and we’re trying to make sure it’s woven into the fabric of government schools in rural India. Here’s what we’re focusing on:

  • Comprehensive teacher training: We’re committed to giving teachers ongoing training, helping them boost their digital skills so they can pass that knowledge on to their students.
  • Curriculum integration: We believe in mixing digital literacy into every subject. It’s essential for students to pick up these skills no matter what they’re studying.
  • Infrastructure development: We’re working on upgrading the digital setup in schools – the right devices – so that everyone has what they need to learn.
  • Community engagement: And it doesn’t stop with the schools. We’re bringing parents and the community into this journey, building a supportive environment.

In Delhi, our Digital Literacy Programme equips government school students with 21st-century skills, giving them access to computer-enabled classrooms, online learning platforms, and guided digital learning. The initiative empowers both teachers and students to make technology an integral part of everyday learning.

In Madhya Pradesh, our Digital Literacy Programme focuses on building strong digital foundations across schools by training educators, enhancing infrastructure, and integrating tech-led learning into the state’s education system. This large-scale initiative is bridging the digital divide and preparing students for future opportunities.

The Future of Digital Literacy for Students

At Peepul, we believe that the future of education in government schools depends on making digital literacy a core part of learning — not just an add-on. Specifically talking about our Exemplar school here, we have embedded digital literacy periods into the school timetable from Grades 1–5, ensuring it is part of everyday academic delivery. Our peer-mentoring model empowers trained teachers to coach their colleagues, reducing dependency on external trainers and building long-term sustainability within the system.

To support this, we use digital dashboards that track student learning and teacher adoption, integrated into regular school reviews. Lesson plans and modules are aligned with curriculum outcomes, so that digital literacy strengthens core learning goals rather than standing apart from them.

We have already demonstrated proof of concept with over 600 students at Lajpat Nagar 3 school showing how digital literacy can transform learning in a government school. Our resources are bilingual (English–Hindi), ensuring inclusivity, and we are expanding opportunities for students to showcase their skills through innovation challenges and Zonal Science Fairs.

By combining shared devices, unplugged content, and open-source platforms, we have designed a low-cost, replicable model that can be scaled across other schools in Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, and beyond. With structured teacher training modules, curriculum-aligned lesson plans, and strong partnerships such as Amazon Future Engineer, we are building a blueprint that makes digital literacy possible — even in resource-constrained contexts.

For us, digital literacy is not just about using technology; it’s about preparing students to think critically, solve problems, and thrive in the future world of work. This is the future we are working towards every day — sustainable, scalable, and replicable.
